Tutorial on French Le Plus-que-parfait

Le Plus-que-parfait en français | The French Pluperfect

The plus-que-parfait is an essential French past tense used to describe an action that had already happened before another past action. It is particularly important for B1–B2 learners and for French examinations such as DELF, TEF and TCF.

1. What is the Plus-que-parfait?

The plus-que-parfait generally corresponds to the English past perfect:

had + past participle

Example

She had left before I arrived.

The important idea is:

Action 1 happened before Action 2, both in the past.

7. Plus-que-parfait + Conditionnel passé

One of the most important structures for B1–B2 French is:

SI + PLUS-QUE-PARFAIT → CONDITIONNEL PASSÉ

This is used to express an imaginary past situation, regret or missed opportunity.

Example

Si j’avais étudié davantage, j’aurais réussi l’examen.

If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam.

Another example

Si nous avions réservé plus tôt, nous aurions payé moins cher.

If we had booked earlier, we would have paid less.

Another example

If she had accepted the position, she would have worked in Paris.

⚠️ Important Grammar Rule

Never use the conditional after si in this structure.

Si j’aurais étudié, j’aurais réussi.

Si j’avais étudié, j’aurais réussi.

Remember:

SI → PLUS-QUE-PARFAIT
RESULT → CONDITIONNEL PASSÉ

8. Example Paragraph

🇫🇷 French

Quand Pierre est arrivé au bureau, ses collègues avaient déjà commencé la réunion. Il était en retard parce qu’il avait raté son bus. La veille, il avait préparé tous ses documents, mais il avait oublié de vérifier l’heure de la réunion. S’il avait vérifié son agenda, il serait arrivé à l’heure.

🇬🇧 English

When Pierre arrived at the office, his colleagues had already started the meeting. He was late because he had missed his bus. The day before, he had prepared all his documents, but he had forgotten to check the time of the meeting. If he had checked his calendar, he would have arrived on time.

9. Difference between Passé composé and Plus-que-parfait

This distinction is very important.

Passé composé

J’ai mangé.
I ate / I have eaten.

Plus-que-parfait

J’avais mangé.
I had eaten.

In a sentence

Quand je suis arrivé, Paul a mangé.

Paul ate when/after I arrived.

But:

Quand je suis arrivé, Paul avait déjà mangé.

When I arrived, Paul had already eaten.

The plus-que-parfait clearly tells us that Paul’s eating happened before my arrival.

10. Quick Formula

🇫🇷 French

IMPARFAIT DE AVOIR/ÊTRE + PARTICIPE PASSÉ

HAD + PAST PARTICIPLE

Examples
