Tutorial on French passé composé

🇫🇷 Le Passé Composé – Brief Tutorial

The passé composé is one of the most commonly used French past tenses. It is used to talk about completed actions, specific events, and actions that happened at a particular moment in the past.

It often translates into English as “did,” “have done,” or “has done.”

1. Formation of the Passé Composé

The passé composé is formed with:

Present tense of AVOIR or ÊTRE + past participle (participe passé)

A. With avoir

Most French verbs use avoir.

SubjectExample: parler
J’ai parlé
Tuas parlé
Il / Ellea parlé
Nousavons parlé
Vousavez parlé
Ils / Ellesont parlé

J’ai parlé avec mon professeur.
I spoke / I have spoken with my teacher.

Nous avons terminé notre travail.
We finished our work.

B. With être

Some verbs, especially verbs of movement and pronominal verbs, use être.

Elle est arrivée à l’heure.
She arrived on time.

Nous sommes partis tôt.
We left early.

Je me suis réveillé(e) à sept heures.
I woke up at seven o’clock.

⚠️ Agreement with Être

The past participle agrees with the subject:

  • Elle est arrivée
  • Il est arrivé
  • Elles sont parties
  • Ils sont partis

2. Main Uses of the Passé Composé

A. A Completed Action

Use the passé composé for an action that has finished.

J’ai terminé mes devoirs.
I finished my homework.

Elle a acheté une nouvelle voiture.
She bought a new car.

B. A Specific Event in the Past

Use it for an event that happened at a specific moment.

Hier, nous avons rencontré nos amis.
Yesterday, we met our friends.

Samedi dernier, ils sont allés au cinéma.
Last Saturday, they went to the cinema.

C. A Series of Completed Actions

The passé composé is used to describe several completed actions that follow one another.

Je suis rentré chez moi, j’ai préparé le dîner et j’ai regardé un film.
I returned home, prepared dinner, and watched a film.

D. A Sudden or Interrupting Action

The passé composé often interrupts an action that was in progress in the imparfait.

Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné.

  • Je dormais → ongoing action → imparfait
  • Le téléphone a sonné → sudden event → passé composé

Nous regardions la télévision quand quelqu’un est arrivé.
We were watching television when someone arrived.

E. A Change or a New Situation

The passé composé can describe a completed change or event.
