🇫🇷 Le Conditionnel Passé – Brief Tutorial
The conditionnel passé is used to talk about an action that would have happened in the past under certain conditions. It is commonly used to express regret, criticism, missed opportunities, hypothetical past situations, and reported information.
1. Formation | Formation
The conditionnel passé is formed with:
Avoir or être in the conditionnel présent + participe passé
With avoir

| Il/Elle | aurait parlé |

I would have accepted the offer.
With être
Used with certain verbs of movement and pronominal verbs.

We would have arrived on time.
⚠️ Remember the agreement of the past participle when using être:

⚠️ Important Rule
Do not confuse the conditionnel passé with the plus-que-parfait:
| Plus-que-parfait | Conditionnel passé |
|---|---|
| J’avais travaillé | I had worked |
| J’étais parti(e) | I had left |
| J’aurais travaillé | I would have worked |
| Je serais parti(e) | I would have left |
Remember:
Si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel passé
Si j’avais mieux préparé l’examen, j’aurais obtenu une meilleure note.
